On Monday, April 17, 2023, GEAR UP and East Valley College & Career Center hosted over 35 organizations at the second annual career fair. All students were able to attend and it was a great opportunity to explore possible career pathways. Students were highly engaged in talking with community organizations about career options and personal career paths. While the event wasn't intended to be a job fair, we do know that at least one student landed a job interview and subsequently a job from her connections at the fair.

For the 3rd time in EVSD History, a PEP Destination Imagination (DI) Team will be representing at Global Finals! DI is a problem-solving competition meant to ignite the power of creativity and collaboration. This year, our 8th-grade team, “Aged Improvolone,” won regionals, and was amongst the top teams at the Washington State Competition. At Global Finals, they will join 14,000 students from multiple countries as they compete and connect with other amazing kids. If you would like to donate to the PEP team, please visit evsd.org and click on the Donations tab. From there, select Otis Orchards and Destination Imagination Global Finals. We thank you for your support!

The Intro to Agriculture classes went on a field trip to the Spokane Conservation District (SCD) and Spokane Community College (SCC) on April 14th. The students learned about composting, natural resources, invasive species, forestry, and the geology of the area. In addition, they became aware of the various career fields that are employed by the organization. The students helped with a couple of service projects while at SCD. They moved 27 barrels that were going to be used to make rain barrels that evening. They also cut and untangled twine to open up the canopy of several trees that were delivered. What seemed like nothing to the students, saved SCD hours of work, and they were very grateful! At SCC the students learned about the various AG/HORT programs and they toured the greenhouses. There were 26 students that attended, they were all engaged and asked great questions. EV students are the best!

A big hug and many thanks to Karen Toreson and Dave Lindstrand from Spokane Valley Sunrise Rotary Club. The cart of boxes contained hygiene and personal products as well as other items needed by our students. We are so grateful for the many partnerships we have with our community and business groups. Hello EV Students, Staff, and Families, About an hour ago, I was one of 35 superintendents across the state who received a threatening email indicating a bomb threat. The message was emailed to each of the 35 superintendents at the same time. Law enforcement has been notified here and in the many different jurisdictions across the state. Though this is assumed to be a hoax, we are taking precautions. Given recent situations within our own school district and in schools across the state and nation, I felt it important that you learn of this from me rather than through the media. Thank you. Together, we are East Valley. Brian Talbott Superintendent. -bt
